A simple definition of trauma is the psychological or emotional response to a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. Many times, trauma refers to something that can be life threatening or potentially life threatening and feels inescapable. By this definition, we are in a moment of global trauma with the emergence of COVID-19.
You may find yourself sleeping too much or not enough, eating too much or not enough, and even becoming irritable with loved ones or feeling alone. These are normal reactions to abnormal stressors. While it’s easy to minimize or discount these potential symptoms of trauma, recognizing them and practicing self-care can help you move through those feelings without turning to self-destructive coping strategies. Remember, trauma can challenge our sense of self and feelings of safety in the world, so for anyone with prior exposure to trauma, practicing self-care is even more important!
